Make a large quantity of rich, creamy homemade hot cocoa mix using simple pantry staples. This no-cook powder is perfect for stocking your pantry or packaging as a cozy winter gift.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder (natural or Dutch-process)
  • 2 cups powdered milk (optional, omit for dairy-free)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder (optional, deepens chocolate flavor)

Instructions

  1. Measure the granulated sugar, cocoa powder, powdered milk (if using), salt, and optional espresso powder into a very large bowl.
  2. Use a whisk to thoroughly combine all the dry ingredients. Whisk for at least two minutes to break up any clumps of cocoa powder or sugar and ensure even distribution.
  3. If you prefer a very fine powder, pulse the mixture in a food processor in batches until smooth, being careful not to over-process.
  4. Transfer the finished mix to airtight containers for storage. This recipe makes a big batch suitable for gifting or long-term pantry storage.
  5. To prepare a single serving, mix 1/3 cup of the hot cocoa mix with 1 cup of hot milk or water. Whisk until smooth and enjoy.

Notes

  • For a richer, creamier beverage, use whole milk when preparing the drink.
  • To make this mix dairy-free or vegan, omit the powdered milk entirely. The resulting mix will still produce a good hot chocolate when mixed with hot water or a non-dairy milk alternative.
  • Package the mix in decorative jars with a ribbon and top with mini marshmallows for an easy, thoughtful holiday food gift.
  • This mix stores well at room temperature in an airtight container for up to one year.
