Make crispy, cheesy crackers at home that taste better than store-bought versions using only four simple ingredients. This recipe is quick and perfect for snacks or lunchboxes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the flour and salt in a medium bowl.
  2. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until it is evenly distributed.
  4. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough just comes together. Do not overmix.
  5. Form the dough into a flat disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and chill it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out thinly, about 1/16 inch thick, for the crispiest texture.
  8. Use a small cookie cutter or knife to cut the dough into desired cracker shapes.
  9. Place the crackers on the prepared baking sheets. Prick each cracker twice with a fork.
  10. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, rotating the sheets halfway through, until the edges are lightly golden brown and the crackers are crisp.
  11. Transfer the crackers to a wire rack to cool completely. They will crisp up further as they cool.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, use a mix of cheddar and Parmesan cheese.
  • Roll the dough as thinly as possible to achieve a crunchy, better than store-bought texture.
  • If you want a Southern Cheese Cracker flavor, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the dry ingredients.
  • Store cooled crackers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
