Make the best French Onion Dip recipe by slowly caramelizing sweet onions until deep brown, then mixing them into a creamy base for a gourmet appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Combine the sliced onions, butter, and olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. Cook the onions slowly, stirring every 5 to 10 minutes. Allow them to soften and release moisture for the first 20 minutes.
  3. Reduce the heat to low. Continue cooking the onions for 40 to 50 minutes more, stirring occasionally, until they turn a deep, rich brown color. Do not rush this step; slow cooking develops the deep flavor.
  4. Stir in the salt and pepper during the last 5 minutes of caramelization. Remove the onions from the heat and let them cool completely.
  5. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.
  6. Add the sour cream, Greek yogurt, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder to the cream cheese. Mix until just combined and creamy.
  7. Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the cream cheese mixture. Mix gently to distribute evenly.
  8. Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld. This is key for the ultimate French Onion Dip.
  9. Before serving your party dip ideas, taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Garnish with fresh chives.

Notes

  • For the deepest flavor, you can cook the onions for up to 1 hour and 15 minutes total. If the pan gets too dry, add a teaspoon of water to scrape up any browned bits (fond).
  • To make this a make ahead appetizer, prepare the dip up to 2 days in advance.
  • Serve this savory creamy dip with sturdy potato chips, rye crackers, or fresh vegetable sticks.
