Make this simple, creamy marinated cheese appetizer using cheddar and cream cheese. It requires no baking and is perfect for entertaining or holiday gatherings. Let it marinate overnight for the best flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Optional additions: 1/4 cup sliced pimento-stuffed green olives or roasted red peppers

Instructions

  1. Combine the cheddar cheese cubes and cream cheese cubes in a medium, non-reactive container or a large, sealable jar.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the olive oil, red wine vinegar, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, black pepper, and salt until well combined. This creates your flavorful cheese marinade.
  3. If using, gently stir in the olives or roasted red peppers into the marinade mixture.
  4. Pour the marinade mixture over the cheese cubes, ensuring all pieces are submerged.
  5. Cover the container tightly and refrigerate for at least 12 hours, or preferably overnight. This step allows the cheese to absorb the marinade flavors.
  6. When ready to serve, let the cheese sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes before presenting.
  7. Serve the marinated cheese cubes with crackers, pita chips, or crusty bread for a savory finger food display.

Notes

  • For a different texture, you can use a block of cream cheese and slice the cheddar into cubes, then layer them in the jar.
  • This appetizer is excellent for potlucks because it travels well and tastes better after marinating for 24 hours.
  • If you prefer a tangier flavor, add 1 teaspoon of dried dill to the marinade.
