This recipe delivers the classic 7 layer salad, featuring crisp lettuce, sweet peas, hard-boiled eggs, sharp cheese, and bacon, all topped with a creamy dressing. It is simple to prepare and perfect for gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 head iceberg lettuce, shredded
  • 1 cup frozen green peas, thawed
  • 4 hard-boiled eggs, chopped
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup chopped red onion
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1 cup crumbled bacon
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, white vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Assemble the layers in a large glass bowl, starting with the base layer: Place the shredded iceberg lettuce at the bottom.
  3. Add the next layer: Sprinkle the thawed green peas evenly over the lettuce.
  4. Add the third layer: Distribute the chopped hard-boiled eggs over the peas.
  5. Add the fourth layer: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the eggs.
  6. Add the fifth layer: Scatter the chopped red onion over the cheese.
  7. Add the sixth layer: Place the chopped celery on top of the onions.
  8. Spread the dressing: Carefully spread the prepared creamy dressing evenly over the celery layer, sealing the vegetables below.
  9. Add the final layer: Sprinkle the crumbled bacon over the dressing.
  10. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate the salad for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  11. When ready to serve, remove the plastic wrap. Do not toss the salad; serve directly from the bowl, scooping down through all seven layers.

Notes

  • You can prepare all the individual layers and the dressing up to 24 hours in advance. Keep them separate and assemble the salad just before chilling.
  • For the best presentation, use a clear glass trifle or punch bowl to showcase the distinct layers.
  • If you are making this ahead of time, wait to add the bacon until just before serving to keep it crisp.
