Make these incredibly easy, melt-in-your-mouth 3-ingredient butter cookies. This simple recipe requires only flour, butter, and sugar, needs no mixer, and is perfect for quick sweet treats or holiday baking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the softened butter and sugar. Mix them together by hand or with a wooden spoon until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Do not overmix.
  3. Gradually add the flour to the butter and sugar mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms. You may need to use your hands to bring the dough together.
  4. Roll the dough into small balls or press it into a disk and use cookie cutters to shape the cookies. Place them on the prepared baking sheets.
  5. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Watch them closely as they brown quickly.
  6. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before moving them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use high-quality butter.
  • If you prefer a slightly crispier cookie, chill the dough for 15 minutes before cutting shapes.
  • These cookies are excellent plain, or you can dust them with powdered sugar after cooling for a classic shortbread look.
